January, 2006 The Jams have begun to evolve. We are seeing new faces and a different mix of musicians each time we play. If you have been thinking about it but just haven't made it down, carve some time out of your busy schedule and come in and get your fix. These are whatever you would like them to be - laid back and casual - just let us know you are here to play and we will fit you in and make you welcome. Audiences are appreciative and warm - its a fun evening and a nice vibe. We will play with you or get out of your way, whatever you would like! If you have a special request, just give a call or send us an email so we can set things up for you. The last jam of 2005 at the Landmark was pure joy. What began as a quiet evening built into a really nice session full of exploration and creativity for a lively audience. Gary did one of his blues ad lib specials, this time about angels with drying tears. Wonderful. Carl and Tom showed up with their harps and we had some amazing moments of instrumentals with real sizzle. Later, James stepped in to play a little bass, and Max helped out on drums, supporting Johnny's come back on the stage on guitar and vocals. We rounded out the evening with Gary, Vallorie, Carl and Tom in a flurry of bluesmania jam - this is what it is all about! Thanks to everyone for making this a memorable way to finish the 2005 Jams at the Landmark. See you all next year...(I know, its only next week, but its still fun to say it.) It's a Jam - bring your instrument, or borrow a Pan! Thursday December 8th Landmark When I first heard Ed start drumming I thought it was an interesting sound, so I looked closer, and there it was - a good old fashioned cooking pan - borrowed from the kitchen at the Landmark. Ed dropped in on the jam without his Conga drums, so not to be outdone, he simply improvised. And not a bad sound at all! And speaking of some nice sound, we were delighted to be joined by Lowell John Mitchell from Portland. Lowell is not a stranger to the Landmark -having played here on numerous occasions, most recently with his Portland band Heavy Petting Zoo. His fun rhythmic style was a treat and we hope he will drop in on us again. Check out the latest photos in Jam Photo Album 4 or visit the Photo Album page for links to all of the photo albums.
Giving Thanks for the Music Thursday November 24th Landmark What a great way to spend Thanksgiving evening! Most of the gang was there (Bob, Dan, Dave, Linda, Ken, Gary, Vallorie) and we were joined by jazz guitarist Lou Caputo. Gary got us all in the mood with his impromptu "Tryptophan Blues" to start the evening off. When was the last time you heard someone just make up a song on the fly like that? Oh, wait that was last week when Gary made one up on stage at the Moose Jam... Ken treated us with a few choice favorites midway through the evening, and Lou and Gary trading licks on Spider and the Fly was great fun. Another memorable moment was right at the end of the evening just as we were about to pack up. The music sort of spilled over and ran off the stage and onto the floor when someone handed John a guitar and he started plucking out Lime and the coconut with Lou backing him up. He called out for a bass and Gary obliged. Dan slipped back behind the drums again for the last song of the evening, and it was all like an extra slice of Thanksgiving Pie - pure indulgence. Ken brought his digital camera, so we posted some fun pics - check them out in Jam Photo Album 3. Thanks, Ken! What a nice audience we had, too! Lots of our regular friends and family, local color and fun loving folks. John Fischer and his wife came down from Milwaukee to spend the holiday on the Oregon Coast and were absolutely delighted by the evening. John drives trucks and told me the story of being on the road near Olympia when he asked his CB buddies where to go on the Oregon Coast for Thanksgiving. Hey, there is this great little blues bar in Yachats, they told him. So here they were, and they thoroughly enjoyed the whole vibe, the music, the impromptu songs, this group of musicians that come together to make a little homegrown groove. So for a terrific group of musicians, a warm appreciative audience, the best bar staff around and for Bruce giving us the opportunity to bring it all together...we give thanks.
What is happening to Waldport?! Friday November 18th Moose Lodge We had some new faces at the Moose Lodge for the 18th, including Tim on keyboards, Brian on guitar, Curtis on drums and Pontiac Slim played a bit of guitar later in the evening. Jack showed up to play a bit of sax (to the delight of sax fans in the audience), Most of the regular crew was there: with Jeff on keyboards, Dave on electric guitar, Linda on vocals, Dan trading out with Curtis on drums, Gary on guitar, and Vallorie on Bass. We are starting to see this jam/open Mic really turn into something with a much larger crowd of appreciative audience members. Finally there is something going on in Waldport!! Photos by Rockin Deb again!! Check out the newest additions in the Jam photo Albums where we have a slideshow style version of all the jams. Click on the little triangular button on the right side of each slideshow to scroll through. You might see yourself there!
Thursday November 17th Landmark Thanks to all those who continue to support the Landmark open Mic/jams, it continues to be the rock'n-est little joint on the coast. What a nice place this is to play, and to listen to music. And speaking of the music, these jams are starting to sound really good! With some decent audio gear (nice Mics, a good PA head, and monitors) to add to the house Carvin speakers the musicians can really hear what they are doing and play together. Dave, Linda, Dan, Gary, Vallorie, Ken, Gabe, Max, Annie, and John from Waldport showed up too! Debbie helped once again with photography - keep at it girl, you are our proof we really exist! November 10th, 2005 This was our first evening running the Jam/Open Mic at the Landmark. The Thursday night jams have been a feature of the Landmark in Yachats for some time now, and Max wanted a break from organizing them, so Bruce set us up to do it. This first evening for us was great- lots of musicians came to play and we did our best to get everyone through the rotations and have a chance to play. Bob brought his space guitar to the mix while Gary, Ken and Gabe rotated through on acoustic/electric guitar and provided some vocals. Vallorie, Gary, Dave and Bill all took turns at bass, and Dan, Jack and Todd took turns at the drums. Dave did a beautiful job on electric guitar, Karen played a hand drum and occasional tambourine, and Linda brought her lovely vocals to the group for a couple of very pretty songs. Jack also played sax for a rotation and we finally got Bill into the PA system on his harmonica. There were some very memorable songs -Bob led the way on a rendition of House of the Rising Sun with Gary on Vocals that was inspiring. Later, Ken and then Gary led parts of an impromptu medley with Season of the Witch and For What Its Worth - that was a lot of fun. Thanks go to Ken for bringing out a few of his originals. Vallorie did most of the organizing, with Debbie's help (who also took lots of photos... which we impatiently await her to download!) What a great evening - we look forward to organizing these jams on Thursdays now for awhile - (subject of course to the occasional Thursday that Bruce will book other acts). You might want to bookmark the schedule as we will keep you posted on any changes. Plan on signing in when you arrive - there is a white notebook that helps us make sure everyone gets fair playing time - so add your name and info to the list. We hope this will keep us all on track so everyone gets a fair go. If you would like to receive email on any changes to the schedule, just drop us a line at cleanslate@actionnet.net. Happy playing, see you next week! October 21st, 2005: This was a fantastic first Jam/Open Mic at the Moose Lodge in Waldport- we had a great gathering of local musicians, including space music magician, Bob, local favorites Dave (electric guitar) and Linda (vocals), Dan on drums, Ken from down Florence way brought his acoustic/electric Martin and vocals to the mix, and Seal Rocker Jeff played keyboards. Gary played acoustic/electric guitar, and vocals, and relieved on bass. Vallorie on bass and vocals. Debbie provided an ear for levels and sound mix, and the local Moose members and guests had a memorable evening, dancing and enjoying the live music. |
